Alternative Break in Israel
Service, Learning, Connection. Winter 2007/2008
Service: Meaningful direct service that addresses unmet social needs in Israel, enables community interaction and motivates participants to become active citizens.
Learning: Unpeeling the layers of Israeli society: its challenges and celebrations in social justice.
Connection: Inspiring stronger connections between people, societies, social justice, Judaism and Israel.
This winter, 120 students will participate in hands-on service, experiential learning, and Jewish exploration in Israel. Alternative Break in Israel participants will spend the first few days understanding the economic and policy background of Israel's socio-economic issues and gaining knowledge about the specific issue they will be volunteering with. After a pluralistic Shabbat, students will break into smaller groups to volunteer in areas such as working with the Ethiopian community, low-income communities in Israel, children of foreign workers, and more.
Costs:
Thanks to a generous grant from the Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation, Alternative Break in Israel only costs $500 per participant.
Criteria:
Committed leaders on campus who are dedicated to community service and activism. Participants will be expected to be engaged citizens upon their return to campus by becoming more involved in service, activism and advocacy as well as by speaking and or writing about their experiences in either their home communities or college campuses. Applicants must have previous Israel experience.
*Please note that Alternative Break in Israel is committed to direct service work in various communities in Israel. Opportunities for free exploration and touring in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv or other major Israeli cities are not scheduled components of this trip. Students are encouraged to pursue additional travel in Israel at the conclusion of Alternative Break.
