Known by many names (Lox and Talks, Schmooze with Jews, etc.), the Bagel Brunch is one of the allstars of many Hillel program repetoires. Bagel Brunch combines all the necessary pieces of a successful program, low in cost, highly social, and a laid back atmosphere.
The Plan: Choose a time during the week when lots of students have a break for lunch. This can vary from campus to campus. Once you've decided on the time, simply start sending out invitations and putting up
flyers advertising a bagel lunch on campus. Depending on your financial situation, you can choose to make this a free event, or charge a fee for entrance. If you do decide to charge, make sure the price of attending
Bagel Brunch is no more than what the average student would spend for lunch on campus.
Making it Happen: To be true to its name, a Bagel Brunch must include bagels! The day of the event pick up the bagels and all the fixings such as cream cheese and lox. If you're feeling creative, include some flavored cream cheeses, whip up some tuna salad, or include some veggies and dip. Make sure to remember beverages! If you've planned your Bagel
Brunch to take place closer to breakfast time than lunch, have some coffee, tea, and orange juice on hand to perk students up. For a lunchtime Bagel Brunch, juice and soda will suffice.
Strategies for Success: Bagel Brunches run best when there isn't a set program and students are able to mingle freely and get to know each other. If you absolutely must plan a program during Bagel Brunch, a simple "icebreaker" should be the perfect thing to kickstart the schmoozing.
Variations: For a more structured program, use the time to talk about this weeks' Torah portion or an important topic in Jewish learning. For study guides and discussion questions, use the Jewish Resources site provided by Hillel.
