In order to fullfill the mitzvah of eating in the sukkah during Sukkot, have a pizza feast inside! Because of Sukkot's timely occurance at the start of the year, this can be a great kick-off event, with lots of food and schmoozing.
The Plan: Combine "Pizza in the Hut" with an earlier sukkah-building program, with participants rewarded with pizza immediatly after or build the sukkah earlier in the week. Either way, the sukkah comes first! Decorate it and make it homey with paperchains and plastic fruit (stray animals like to eat the real stuff, so beware!).
Making it Happen: Arrange to have the pizza's delivered just before the program starts and make sure you have enough paper plates, napkins, cups, and cutlery.
Strategies for Success: Start the year off right by inviting lots of first year students. Publicize in the areas where they're usually found, such as dorms, dining halls and the Sudent Union Building. Making sure the pizza comes early is a good technique to making sure that students mingle right off the bat!
Variations: Any food can be served in the sukkah, so if you want to get creative, go for it! Plan an Israeli spread or a harvest banquet and match your decorations to your theme.
